One of the things I like to try to accomplish in my pastel work is the balance between highly finished details and the rough, textured beauty of unfinished strokes. This piece was fun because it allowed me to tell a story (I do so love to make you think about what’s happening in the picture), while practicing to keep the background unfinished as a contrast to the very finished characters in the foreground. Which is a fancy way of saying I had fun playing with a lot of blue chalk and imagining what the fish were thinking.
